In late 2011, rapper M.I. and producer DJ Cutt, collectively known as Constant Deviants, released Platinum: The Mixtape, a project that found the Brooklyn- and Baltimore-based duo mixing all original tracks with a handful of industry favorites. The project did well to show off the duo’s range and diversity, important in today’s ever-changing hip-hop landscape, where genres are defined and re-defined weekly, monthly, and yearly. Certain sounds are timeless, though, and with their latest string of all-original non-album tracks – a handful of songs that will precede their forthcoming Diamond album – Constant Deviants are taking it back to their roots. And with their latest leak, “Forever,” the duo, as the title suggests, shows their greatest strength: timeless, boom-bap-driven hip-hop.
