Vince Staples performed an NPR Tiny Desk Concert, his first at NPR’s actual office after a 2021 Tiny Desk (Home) appearance during the pandemic. Backed by a live band, Staples performed songs from his new album Cry Baby, including a moment honoring slain Black Panther Party members before performing “Go! Go! Gorilla.”
The talented Vince Staples returns to the Tiny Desk Concert series, but this time he’s in NPR’s actual office — his first appearance was during the pandemic as part of the Tiny Desk (Home) series. Staples brings a new sound with his latest album, Cry Baby, performing backed by a live band. In between songs, Staples chopped it up with the office, naming Black Panther Party members killed by police and security (George Jackson, Bobby Hutton, Larry Kimmons) before performing “Go! Go! Gorilla,” a song about fear of law enforcement in the Black community. He closed the set with “Only in America,” another standout from the new album. A very nice performance overall.
