DJ Premier continues his string of high-profile collaborations, this time teaming up with rising artist Samara Cyn for a bold new cover of A Tribe Called Quest’s classic “Can I Kick It?” The track, an Amazon Music Original, is available exclusively on the platform now.
Produced entirely by Premier, the reimagined version trades the original’s laid-back groove for a modern, high-energy sound built specifically for Major League Soccer’s new campaign. Samara Cyn brings her own distinct lyricism to the track, putting a fresh spin on one of hip-hop’s most iconic songs while keeping its DNA intact.
Premier didn’t take covering the Tribe classic lightly, either. “To cover a timeless classic of A Tribe Called Quest’s record is an honor to be trusted to present it,” Premier said, adding that he personally reached out to Q-Tip to let him know before releasing it. It’s the kind of respect for the culture that’s defined Premier’s career, whether he’s reworking a golden-era anthem or linking up with The Alchemist for new material.
The song now serves as the musical centerpiece of “Thanks World, We’ll Take It From Here,” MLS’s largest coordinated marketing push in league history. Timed to convert World Cup momentum into MLS fandom as the regular season resumes July 16-17, the campaign features Lionel Messi, Son Heung-Min, USMNT captain Tim Ream, and celebrity owners David Beckham, Matthew McConaughey, Magic Johnson, and Kevin Durant, running across national broadcast, streaming, and social platforms.
