50 Cent premiered his documentary based on RUN DMC’s Jam Master Jay at a private screening at the Sundance Film Festival yesterday (January 20).

The documentary, titled The Life and Death of Jam Master Jay, will be one of the first projects released by the rapper’s recently launched film company, Cheetah Films.

Jam Master Jay played a major part in the early stages of 50 Cent’s career. He was shot to death in his Queens studio in 2002 and his murder has not been solved.

According to The New York Daily News, hip hop mogul Russell Simmons and actor Seth Green were among the people who attended the screening of the documentary.

Jay was a mentor,” 50 Cent explained to his audience. “He’s the first person I went into the studio with the intention of producing a song for an album, which was never released because Jay’s touring schedule was so hectic he wasn’t able to focus on it.”

“After Jay, I went to Columbia Records, but that didn’t work. Columbia Records was too scared to even talk to me,” the G-Unit honcho added. “So I learned to market myself, like Jay had done. A lot of the major labels and companies were ignoring me because they were only looking at my street life. It makes me rub it in now. Right in their faces. I want to go into their offices and say, ‘I remember you. Didn’t they fire you yet?’”

Earlier this week, 50 Cent revealed that Cheetah Films has already bought eight scripts and one of them includes a film titled The Dance which will star himself and Nicholas Cage.

The rapper is currently gearing up to release his fourth solo album Before I Self Destruct in March.
